Opal Marie Smythe formerly of Moose Jaw and Halvorgate/Chaplin area passed away May 12, 2014 at the Bethany Care Home in Didsbury, AB at the age of 97 years. She was born December 27, 1916 at Central Butte, SK to John William McMillin and Marie Marguerite McMillin (Waltser). She attended several schools in rural Saskatchewan, the latter being Strongfield. She married Frederick Young Charles Smythe October 28, 1936.They farmed and raised their family at Halvorgate, SK. She worked alongside her partner on all aspects of farming and was active in the community. Opal and Fred retired to Moose Jaw in the fall of 1977, making many more new friends. They became members of St. Andrew’s United Church, Cosmos Club, and the Moose Jaw and District Seniors Club. They loved to dance and Opal was an ardent quilter at Timothy Eaton Senior Centre. In 2006 Opal moved into the Bentley Retirement Home in Moose Jaw. In 2009 she moved to Airdrie, AB to be closer to her family. In 2011 she moved to the long term care facility in Didsbury, AB. Opal, (Mom) leaves to mourn her Daughter, Loretta (John) Mattus and their family Debbie (Brian) Billay, Katelyn and Myles; Ronald (Donna) Mattus, Amy (Brady) Heatcoat, Sheldon, Trevor and Randi; Bonnie (Malcolm) Conly, Cuylar, Orrin, Anastasia, and Lukas; James Mattus; her Son, John (Margaret) Smythe and their family David (Iris), Tyler, Paige, Courtney; step children, Rickiemei and Aira; Joan (Kelly) Boles, Carter, Lauren and Isaac; her Daughter, Darlene (Ben) Hoogstraten and their family Ken (Erin), Liam and Kade; Doug (Carmen), Ava and Rhett; her brother, Glen (Lois) McMillin and many, cousins, nieces and nephews and friends who love and cherish her. She is predeceased by her husband, Fred, 1997; parents, Will, 1957, and Mary McMillin, 1920; step-mother, Alice Genevive McMillin (Jorden) 1973; sister, Florence (Leonard) Peters, 1987; an infant baby sister, Pearl, 1920; step-sisters, Irene (Joe) Deeney (Jorden) 2004; Dorothy ( Kenneth) Senneth (Jorden) 1940; Elnora (Dale) Robey (Jorden) 1981; and also in-laws, nieces and nephews cousins, and many friends. The family is deeply appreciative for the love and compassionate care that was provided to our Mother by all the staff at Alberta Health Services, Unit 4 and the Bethany Care Center. The family is also thankful for the many cards and messages of sympathy from family and friends. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrews United Church, 60 Athabasca Street E., Moose Jaw, on Saturday June 28th at 1: 30 PM. Reverend Jim Tenford will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to St. Andrews United Church Memorial Fund. In living memory of Opal, a memorial planting will be made by W.J.
