Doris (Brophy) Jobe

Born In: Lockeport, Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: Canada
Passed on: June 26th, 2014

We regret to announce the passing of our most wonderful mother Doris Alberta (Brophy) Jobe , 86 years, on June 26, 2014.
A longtime resident of Glace Bay, Doris was born in Lockeport, Nova Scotia and most recently was a resident of Parkstone Enhanced Care home in Halifax.
A trail- blazing young woman for her time, she married the late Gilbert James Jobe in 1952, after relocating from the south shore to begin her career.
Doris was a public school teacher for 31 years, graduating from the then Normal College in Truro, N.S. From leading in one room schools such as in Lockeport and Louisbourg, where the day began stoking a pot belly stove , to her final assignment designing a new Home Economics unit at the John Bernard Croak Memorial School in Glace Bay. Doris made a meaningful impact on hundreds of students and parents alike, continuing post-retirement to establish penpal programs , and happily packing “flat Stanley” in her purse on request.
Doris was an active member of Glace Bay United Baptist Church; Glace Bay Historical Society; past Regent of the local Isle Royale IODE; the Cape Breton Home Economics Association; and enjoyed community service with Gilbert in the then Rotary Club, Glace Bay.
She was a self-made historian, avid reader and a cultural explorer, enjoying many Elderhostel and learning travel excursions in North America, Europe and south Asia. Her colourful personality and skills as a traditional seamstress will live on in the many quilts she carefully crafted over the years for each of her children, grandchildren and many special friends.
Always a positive role model and a loving and attentive Mom and “Grammie,” she enjoyed everything about our Glace Bay home, always making it a welcoming gathering place for holiday and summer family reunions. She could mow the lawn, fix the dishwasher and don an evening gown all in the same day!
Doris is survived by four children: Robert Jobe (Audrey), Burlington Ont.; Margery Jobe Warren, Boston, Mass.; Gregory Jobe ( Colette), Montague PEI; Beverly Boyd (Stephen), Cole Harbour, N.S. Her 10 admiring grandchildren include Lyndsay, Dennis and David Jobe; Matthew and Mark Warren; Anastasia, Laurena and James Jobe; and Scott and Adam Boyd.
Doris was predeceased by her beloved parents Lenzie and Margery Brophy; sisters Beryl Enslow and Muriel Sutton.
Doris also treasured her many lifelong friends leaving a legacy of continued friendship and extended families going forward. We wish to recognize in particular, Marla Graham. Glace Bay for her loyal and caring companionship to Mom in recent years.
Doris was a selfless individual who appreciated her blessings and gave of her love, her time and means to everyone who had the privilege to know her.. Generous to many different social causes, in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a charity of choice.
A celebration of Doris’s life, including reception for family and friends, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at the Glace Bay United Baptist Church, York Street, Glace Bay. A family burial will follow on July 3, at Forest Haven Cemetery.
