Kathleen Roberts

Passed on: June 30th, 2014

ROBERTS, SERGEANT (RET’D) KATHLEEN MARGARET, CD - Sergeant (Ret’d) Kathleen Margaret Roberts, CD passed away peacefully at home June 30, 2014 with her friends at her side. Born in Manchester, England September 3, 1946 to the late Owen and Marjorie Roberts, she immigrated to Canada in 1953 aboard the RMS Ascania with her family. After several years in various communities in Western Canada, her family settled in Saint John, NB in 1963. Kathleen joined 31(Saint John) Service Battalion on 12 September, 1972 as a cook. She transferred to Transport, and over her 31 years of service she was a staunch contributor to the Battalion’s interests. Kathleen retired as a Sergeant in 2003, and her work at the Battalion was a major part of her life, with many fond memories. She volunteered for many organizations over the years, always wanting to help in a cause. Her favorite was the Navy League of Canada. She was a proud member of the Barrack Green Warrant Officer’s and Sergeant’s Mess, and was very fond of the camaraderie and events sponsored by the mess over the years. She worked in the dry cleaning business for years, and then began a long and personally rewarding career with the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation in 1982, retiring as a personal support worker at the CAM unit, St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2011. Kathleen is survived by her brother, Joseph Roberts, of British Columbia, whom she was so happy to see in January 2014 when he visited her, nephews: Timothy and Jonathon Roberts, and grand-nephews: Mattheus, Anthony, and Kristian. Kathleen will be sadly missed by her close friends, Murratte Graves, Patrick Graves, Joe Foote, Becky and Megan Worrall, Colleen Grant, and all of her great friends from the hospital, Barrack Green Armory, and the many organizations she was involved with over the years.
At Kathleen’s request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of her life will be held at the Sergeant’s Mess Barrack Green Armory on Saturday, July 12th, 2014, 4 to 7 pm. Her friends and co-workers are invited to attend and share a special memory. Donations in her memory may be made to the local registered charity “Curly Adams Fund” at the Fairvale Animal Hospital in Quispamsis – a veterinary welfare fund to help homeless animals who are ill. Her life was enriched with animals and Kathleen cared deeply about their well- being. Alternatively, donations may be made to the ALS Society, New Brunswick. Arrangements are in the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
