SURETTE, Jeanette Emilie – It is with great sorrow that we, the family of the late Jeanette (Burke) Surette, aged 101 years and nine months, of Villa Saint Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, announce her passing at the Villa on Monday, June 30, 2014. She is survived by her devoted son, Ralph Surette, Sluice Point; loving daughters, Louise (Laurie) Smith, Arcadia and Eleanor Nickerson, Wedgeport, as well as by a wonderful brother, Simon Burke, and a cherished sister, Evelyn Smith, both of Yarmouth, and many nieces and nephews. Mourning the loss of a much-loved grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother are 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Born October 8, 1912 in Sluice Point, she was the daughter of the late Louie and Louise Burke, Sluice Point, and was the second child to be born in a family of 14. She has always said that hard work never hurt anyone, having left school at an early age to do housework for fifty cents a week to help her family at home. Over the years, she was well-known to have helped many different organizations by selling tickets to raise funds, earning her the name, Ticket Lady. Our mom loved to make quilts and knit socks for the needy. She enjoyed playing cards, selling tickets and playing bingo. On October 8th, she celebrated her 101st birthday at the Villa with family and friends. She was very devoted to her church and God – she was a true Christian. She was predeceased by her husband, Ambrose Joseph Surette; a son, Russell Charles Surette; a daughter-in-law, Mary Surette; son-in-law, Paul Pothier and sister-in-law, Melba Burke, as well as by sisters, Constance, Beatrice, Leona, Irene and Jessie; brothers, Charles, Robert, Richard and Larion and two in infancy. Visitation took place from 4 to 9 Wednesday, with prayers at 8 p.m., both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 3 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Amirault’s Hill, Rev. Maurice LeBlanc, CJM, officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac Foundation or to a charity of choice. When I have come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no tears in a gloom-filled room, why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared, miss me, but let me go. For this journey we all must take, and each must go alone. It’s all part of the Master’s plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, go to the friends we know and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.
