Daniel Horgan

HORGAN, DANIEL - It is with great sadness that the family of Daniel Wilfrid Horgan announce the passing of their father on July 7, 2014 at the Loch Lomond Village. Born on July 30, 1927 in the homestead on the Churchland Road in Golden Grove New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Daniel Joseph Horgan and Beatrice Mary King. Danny was proficient at bowling, golf and softball and an avid hunter and fisherman and shared this knowledge with youth as a long-time instructor of Hunter Safety. Regardless of the weather or season, there were few days that went by that Dad didn’t spend at least a part of the day in the outdoors with summers spent at McCormick’s Lake and the fall at the hunting camp in St. Martins. He was without a doubt, most at home following a brook or wandering through the woods. Danny was employed with CNR for 42 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the CNR Pensioners and a life member of the Saint John Fish and Game Association. Danny and Doreen (Maillet) were married on September 15, 1956 and spent 47 happy years together on Grandview Avenue before Doreen passed away far too soon in February of 2003. Together they raised a family of eight, all of whom survive him; sons Mike (Helen), Mark (Janet), John (Kathie) and Dave (Gail) all of Saint John and daughters Joan (Bob Naismith) and Donna Horgan of Saint John and Maureen (Bruce McCarthy) of Hillsburgh, Ontario and Lynda (Niah Redhead) of Toronto, Ontario. In addition to his wife and parents, Dan was predeceased by brothers: Harold, Ken, Cyril and Donnie and sisters Doris (Stafford) Wade, Rita Gilbride, Winnie Higgins, Eileen McCaskill and Beatrice Collins. In addition to his immediate family, Danny is survived by his brothers Murray (Rae) of Dartmouth, NS and Noel (Margie) of Saint John, NB; grandchildren Andrew, David, Matthew, Shelly, Michelle, Ben, Natasha, Danny, Ryan, Shawn, Ed, Ross, Jill, Danica, Laura, Stephen, Ashley and Corey; four great grandchildren Trey, Mary-Ann, Kai and Mielle as well as numerous nephews and nieces all of whom he loved to tease at every opportunity. On behalf of Danny, his family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Loch Lomond Village Cedar and Maple Houses for their care and attention during his time as a resident.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with visitations on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Stella Maris Church on Friday, July 11th at 12 noon where Danny was a former parishioner and head usher with a reception in the church hall immediately following the mass. The family would be appreciative of any donations made in memory of Danny to the Alzheimer’s Society, The Loch Lomond Villa Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
