GILBERT, MARY CATHERINE - The death of Mary Catherine Gilbert of Burton, NB, took place on July 9, 2014 at the Oromocto Public Hospital at the age of 85 years. Born in Burton, NB, on April 12, 1929, she was the daughter of George Miles Gilbert and Ethel May (Carter) Gilbert. Mary graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in Saint John, NB, in 1947, and she became a member of the New Brunswick Society of X-Ray Technicians in 1949. Her early career saw Mary in Fredericton, Toronto, Butte, Montana and Ottawa. Eventually, Mary worked for six years in Boston, Mass at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Mary returned home to Burton in 1964 where she worked at the X-Ray Department of the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton. Upon the opening of the Oromocto Public Hospital, Mary began working there in the X-Ray Department where she remained until her retirement in 1994. Mary was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Laura (Hilary) McDonough, Ethel (Edward) Shea and her brothers, Francis, Charles (Esther), Most Reverend Bishop Arthur J. Gilbert and Joseph (Margaret) Gilbert. She is survived by her sister, Lucy (John) O’Brien, of Billings, Montana and by her brother Thomas W. (Beatrice) Gilbert, of Burton, NB. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, many grandnieces and grandnephews, and many great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. The family would like to acknowledge the outstanding care and support Mary received from the Emergency Department, Dr. Hayter and staff of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital; and Dr. Beatriz Sainz and staff of the Oromocto Public Hospital.
Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago Street, Oromocto, NB, on Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, July 13th, 2014 at 3:00 p.m with Father Peter Melanson as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery immediately following the mass. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Church Building Fund or to a charity of the Donor’s choice.
