Helen Isabel Sangster, 84 of High Crest Place, New Glasgow and formerly of Maple Crest Senior Citizens Apts., Stellarton, passed away in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow on July 10th, 2014 after a brief illness.
Born in Stellarton, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Jessie (Moores) Betts.
Helen was a great worker which began at an early age when her mother passed away. With three younger siblings and two older, Helen took over the work of her mother in their home. Later she worked for Eastern Bakeries and the Donato Faini & Figli (Canada) Limited plant in Stellarton. She and her former husband (Graham “Duke” Sangster) established “Duke’s Pastry Shop” in Stellarton and ran this successful business for many years.
Helen was known as a very kind person with a wonderful sense of humour. Her great love of music led her to play the organ, despite never having a lesson. She enjoyed dancing and was a great skater. Helen loved animals, especially dogs, and dearest to her heart had been her dog Max.
Surviving are her sister, Marilyn Reekie, Port Perry, Ont.; brother Bill (Shirley) Betts, Bradford, Ont. and several nieces and nephews. Helen loved her family and also had a special relationship with her sister-in-law, Lola Chisholm and nieces Karen and Pat.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Mae (Dan) MacNeil; Jean (Bill) Palmer and Marie Shepherd.
The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Sunday, July 13th followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. both in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton with Rev. Jim Chisholm presiding. Burial will take place in the Lorne Cemetery, Lorne, Pictou County.
