Jessie Balfour Roper

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: July 10th, 2014

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving mother and grandmother, Jessie Balfour Roper, on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Jessie was the daughter of the late James and Ann (Gallacher) Wilson. During the Second World War she met Emerson, her “handsome young Canadian soldier” and set sail for Pier 21 in Halifax, arriving in 1946 as one of the many British war brides. Jessie lived most of her life in Sydney Mines until moving to North Sydney in 1997.
Always very proud of her Scottish heritage, Jessie made a number of trips back to visit all her British friends and relatives. Living in Cape Breton her great joy was spending time with family, especially the many summers relaxing at Lake Ainslie.
Jessie was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughters, Ann Ledgerwood, Charlottetown and Lynn Roper, Catalone, her son, Ian (Chris) Roper, Halifax; her three grandchildren, Sean (Michelle) Ledgerwood, Jennifer Stewart and Tacha Reed (Bryan) and four great-grandchildren, Hanna, Fox, Kaitlyn and Emma.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Emerson Roper; her two sisters, Nettie and Anna; great-grandson, Avery; son-in-law, Kenzie; her sister-in-law, Louise Roper and brother-in-law, Arthur Roper.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service for Jessie will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 14 from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating. A private family committal will be held at Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.
