Bernie Petrie, age 87 of McPherson Street, Glace Bay passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
Born in Glace Bay, Bernie was the son of the late James and Ellen (Hall) Petrie.
Dad worked in No. 2 and 20 Colliery and Glace Bay Central Shops, retiring after 43 years of service. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish. Dad enjoyed reading, carpentry work, plumbing and he built numerous homes. He would help anyone in need.
In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, boxing, hockey as well as being a devoted Red Wings and Toronto Blue Jays fan. Dad had a great voice and he could often be heard singing along with Foster and Allen records. Some of his other past times were watching Jeopardy, taking daily drives around No. 2 and the Beacon Street Dam with his wife, Millie and their special companion, Pebbles, their dog. The most important thing in his life was the love and support he gave to his family.
Bernie is survived by two daughters, Colleen MacLellan, Shirley (Keith) Sampson; three sons, Bernie (Isabelle), Jim (Lena), Wayne (Blanche); two sisters, Ellen McDonald, Sydney Mines, Rita MacKillop, Glace Bay; one brother, Jackie, Waterloo, Ontario; eleven grandchildren, Sandy, Millie, Joe, Krista, Tammy, B.J., Ryan, John, Lauren, Wayne, Pamela; eighteen great grandchildren, Emily, Abby, Cassie, Tyler, Brandon, Haley, Brooke, Bryce, Braxton, Brett, T.J, Rebecca, Emma, Zachary, McKenna, Paige, Benjamin and Carson. Bernie will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Mildred ‘Millie’ (McBride) Petrie in 2007; four sisters, Euphemia, Winnie, Rita, Shirley; three brothers, Jim, Dave, John and his son in law, Sandy MacLellan.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee is Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay.
As an expression of sympathy for Bernie, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
