We, the family, wish to announce the peaceful death of Alice Helen MacDonnell on July 12, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney at the age of 97.
Alice was the daughter of the late Hugh D and Florence Catherine (Lamey) MacDonnell.
Alice was born on April 13, 1917 in Sydney. She was a life-long member of the CWL. After graduating from School in St. Peters, she was accepted into St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Glace Bay. She graduated in 1939 and went to work at St. Rita’s Hospital in Sydney.
She was later employed by Dr. John Burke Sr. as a nurse-receptionist at his dental practice on Bentinck Street. Leaving there, she went to nurse at the Pt. Edward Naval Base until its closure in 1965. Alice transferred to the Halifax Naval Dockyards where she worked until she retired in 1982. Her love of home and family was such that she travelled home every weekend, weather permitting. Having never married, Alice was a loving and generous aunt to her many young nieces and nephews.
Alice was predeceased by her brothers, John, Byron and Oscar; sisters, Mary, Hughena and Muriel; brothers-in-law, Steve MacAdam, Robert Lynch; sisters-in-law, Muriel MacDonnell, Dorothy MacDonnell and nephews, Kenneth MacDonnell and Gregory Lynch.
Alice is survived by her sister, Adeline Lynch; sister-in-law, Doreen MacDonnell and many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the staff of 4B where Alice spent many months and especially the staff of 3B who treated Alice like family, one of their own. We would also like to thank Dr. Mark Sampson for his many years of generous care for Alice. Special thanks to the Palliative Care staff for making Alice’s last days a comfort.
Visitation for the late Alice MacDonnell will be held 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16 at St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. Johnathan Nnajiofor will officiate. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or charity of choice.
