It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, Wanda (Kokoska) McKinnon, 89, on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late Walenty and Rozalia (Wojcik) Kokoska.
She grew up in Whitney Pier, where she was a member of St. Mary’s Polish parish. After marrying, she and her husband Murdock lived in Sydney’s Northend and were members of Sacred Heart parish. Murdock died young and Wanda dedicated her life to raising their six children. She always put her children first and herself last. She taught at Cape Breton Business College, worked at Eastern Light & Power and Nova Scotia Power for 27 years, where she was very active as a labour leader.
Wanda is survived by her daughter, Dorothy (Hugh) MacKinnon, Coxheath; sons, Roddie, Windsor; James, Sydney; Johnny, Port Hawkesbury; and Joey (Roxanne), Sackville, N.B. and sisters, Mary Fliss and Dorothy Kokoskin. She was grandmother “Bobcha” to Natalie, Jason, Darren, John B., Katie, Patrick, Christopher, Michelle, Elizabeth, Daniel, James, Angus, Jessica, Mike and great-grandmother to Ava, Will and Jack.
Wanda was predeceased by husband Murdock (1959); daughter, E. Louise in 2012; brothers, Alex and Bernie and sisters, Tillie Yorke and Helen Michalik.
Visitation will take place Friday, July 18 from 6-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Polish Church with Rev. A. MacLellan officiating with a reception to follow. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
