Robert Hugh Sample Sr. - age 82, of Hopewell, Pictou County, passed away July 20th, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born November 26th, 1931 in New Glasgow he was a son of the late Robert and Catherine Mary “May” (MacEachern) Sample.
Robert grew up in Stellarton, and lived most of his married life in Hopewell.
He worked as a miner at the MacGregor Mine in Stellarton and the McBean Mine in Thorburn. He was a Dragger man at the 1956, Springhill Explosion, and later took over the job of Mine Rescue Superintendant at the McBean Mine in 1965.
Bob started at Scott Paper in 1967 and worked there for 25 years retiring in 1992 as a Production Supervisor.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and was also known for his maple syrup.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years the former Annie Murray, Hopewell; son Robert H. Jr., Hopewell; daughter Marcia (George) Smeltzer, Bridgeville; grandson Michael (Tiffanie), Stellarton; brother Dannie (Elsie) Stellarton; sister Penny (John ) Somers, PEI; sisters-in-law Rita Sample, Phoebe Sample, Caroline Dort; brother-in-law Larry Thompson.
Predeceased by grandson Sandy Smeltzer; brothers James “Butch”, Frank, Roy, William “Bill”; sisters Elizabeth “Bett” and Fern.
Cremation has taken place, at Bob’s request there will be a private graveside service in the Gairloch Cemetery with Rev. Gary Tonks officiating. There will be no visitation at Bob’s request. Donations in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Hopewell General Fund, Gairloch Cemetery or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton.
