Dorothy Doucette

WESTVILLE - Mary “Dorothy” Doucette, age 87, of Water Street, Westville passed away peacefully on Friday July 18th, 2014 at the Glasgow Hall nursing home in Halifax.
Born August 21st, 1926 in Westville, NS, Dorothy was the daughter, and eldest child, of the late Edmund and Catherine (Cyr) Doucette.
Dorothy began working at the age of 16 at the Pictou Shipyard as a Class 1 welder during WWII. Once the War had ended, Dorothy then travelled with some friends to St. Stephen, New Brunswick where she was employed at the St. Croix Cotton Mill. In 1957, Dorothy returned to Westville and began her journey in the grocery business. She worked for Sobeys for several years and then, in 1963, moved to Kitchener, Ontario where she worked for the Dutch Boy grocery chain. In 1967, Dorothy moved back to Westville and returned to Sobeys. Dorothy worked in several stores in Pictou County over the years and became the Store Manager of Scotia Foods in Westville. During the 1970’s, Dorothy became one of the first female store managers in the Sobeys organization. Dorothy worked with Sobeys until she retired in 1989.
Dorothy enjoyed sports and was a pitcher on an all-girls baseball team in late 1940’s. She was a member of the Westville Curling Club and an active bowler. Dorothy enjoyed watching hockey and football. She was a Habs fan and could not be pulled from the TV when John Elway and the Broncos were playing. Dorothy realized the ultimate experience of any hockey fan; she was proud of her pictures of her and her brother Ed holding the prestigious Stanley Cup.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her sons Kevin (Anita), Halifax, and Mike (Carol), Truro and granddaughters, Jodi and Jill. She is also survived by brother Bob (Sharon), Fredericton, NB; sisters Lorraine Cyr (Raymond), Sylvia Eagles (David), Carolyn Cameron (Dana), all of Westville. Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by sister, Helen Doucette and brothers’ Eddie and Fred.
Visitation will be held at the Eagles Funeral Home in Westville on Monday July 21st from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm.Funeral service will take place 11 am Tuesday at The Holy Name C.W.L. will recite prayers at 4 o'clock Monday at the Funeral Home. Dorothy’s funeral service will be held with Father Tom MacNeil officiating at the Holy Name Parish in Westville. Interment will be at the Holy Name Cemetery.
Over the past 6 years, Dorothy showed tremendous perseverance in keeping her Alzheimer’s’ at bay. Although her short term memory had deteriorated, Dorothy still knew those who loved her the most and was able to still talk about her days as a First Class welder during the War. www.eaglesfuneralhome.ca
