Mary Evelyn (MacLean) Walsh, 86 of 34 Champlain Ave. Sydney, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness, with her family by her side.
Born in Bay St. Lawrence, she was the daughter of the late Captain James and Alice (Capstick) MacLean.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney and very active in the parish, particularly with the C.W.L. and served as past president. Mary Evelyn in her early years worked in the Co-op in Bay St. Lawrence and also taught elementary school there. Later, in Cape Breton County, she was employed with the C.B. County School Board. Family was everything to Mom. She loved to sing to her children and as a member of St. Joseph’s Church Choir. Trips with her family to Bay St. Lawrence was an event that brought both great joy and loving memories for Mom.
She is survived by her husband, Sydney ‘Og’ Walsh; daughters, Alice (Darren) Beer, Toronto, Ont.; Colleen (Michael) Matthews, Antigonish; sons, Edward (Kim), Oshawa, Joe of Toronto; grandchildren, Timothy and Ceilidh and brother, Fr. Jim MacLean of Sydney.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Neil, Tom, Fr. Murdock; sisters, Sr. James Marie, Alice, Mary Francis and a sister, Evelyn in infancy.
Visitation for Mary Evelyn Walsh will take place on Friday, July 25 from 4-7 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, Cabot Street, Sydney with Fr. Sandy MacNeil officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sydney Oncology Unit or C.B. Palliative Care Society.
