Gladys Mooney

Passed on: July 25th, 2014

On July 25, 2014 Gladys Alma McKee Mooney passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at her home, with her friends at her side. Her Funeral Service was held Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Grace United Church, with Rev Ruth MacArthur officiating. The Interment took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Eulogy was read by her grandson, Justin Bague and the soloist was Justin's wife, Aubrey. Pallbearers were Deb Moen, Blaine Wellsch, Bruce Stewart, Brian Knight, Brian Oakman and Leo Wengel. Gladys is survived by her son Jim (Dianna), and their son Davin; daughter Shirley (Jim), their son Justin (Aubrey), and daughter Jackie (Nathan); sisters Delia, Verna, Marie, Norma (Mike), Edith, Margaret (Bob); brothers Harvey (Barb), Lyle (Shirley), Richard (Rose); her uncle Orville (Charlotte) Schiiler; sister-in-law Roberta Caldwell and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Wesley and Gladys McKee; husband Harry, son Dayle; brothers Gerald, Elmer, and Jim; sisters Muriel and Irene. Gladys was born February 28, 1933 on the family farm in the Campbellville district near Star City, Saskatchewan, to Wesley and Gladys McKee. Gladys was the seventh daughter in a family that grew to fifteen children in total. Gladys and her siblings worked on the farm as they grew up, making sure that the family was fed and clothed. Each had assigned roles and responsibilities, and worked together to help grandma, who had her hands full with fifteen kids running around, while grandpa kept a roof over their heads. Gladys attended school in Star City, travelling by foot and horseback, until grade nine, when all the girls were prevented from further schooling and kept on the farm to help out. On August 9, 1950 Gladys married Harry Mooney in Star City. Daughter Shirley arrived four years later, son Jim two years after that in 1956, and second son Dayle in 1960. While Gladys was seventh daughter in a family of fifteen, Harry came from a family of seven kids, also from the Star City area. Between the Mooneys and the McKees, pretty well everybody in the area was in one way or another related. Small-town saskatchewan family reunions were something to behold. The family moved from Carrot River to Fairy Glen in 1965 and Gladys became a grain buyer's wife, where Harry managed for the UGG. After another UGG transfer in 1968 to Stewart Valley, the family finally became settled. Gladys worked as custodian at the Elementary school from 1973 until 1982. She was Harry's partner in his carpentry work after he retired for health reasons from the elevator. As Shirley, Jim and Dayle grew, they helped the family construct metal granaries in the hot summers between ball games and gardening. Gladys was involved with the Valley's UCW, United Church, Green Thumbs Horticultural Club, and the Seniors Club. She enjoyed playing ball, curling, square dancing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, gardening, reading, puzzles, crafts of all kinds, bingo, card games, and bird watching. Life doesn't always play fair, and in 1979 on their 29th wedding anniversary, the family lost youngest son Dayle in a tragic industrial accident in Leduc. Mom and Dad struggled with this tragedy and their wedding anniversary was no longer a celebration. In 2000, life once again threw a challenge when Harry's lung condition worsened. In January, Harry passed away and Gladys lost her anchor and lifelong partner. Once again the strength and compassion of Stewart Valley showed itself, and Gladys made the decision to remain here, living independently for the rest of her days with the Valley's support and kindness. Gardening, friendship gatherings at the Seniors Hall, card games, and daily visits from close friends, neighbours and family, became even more important to Gladys. Staying abreast of the goings on in the community, past and present, occupied much of her time. Pop-in visits from neighbours became more frequent and for that we thank each of you for your care and friendship. Donations in Gladys' memory may be made to the Happy Valley Seniors Club, Gen Del, Stewart Valley S0N 2P0, or the Grace United Church. Warren's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
