Linda Maureen Barrett

Born In: Glace Bay

Passed on: August 2nd, 2014

It is with great sadness that we the family of Linda Maureen Barrett, 71, announce her passing on Aug. 2, 2014, at the An Cala Palliative Care unit, CBRH with her loving family and friends by her side.
Born in Glace Bay, Linda was the daughter of the late Russell and Corella (Herridge) Hickman.
Linda was devoted to her family and had a special place in her heart for her five grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was very community minded and her faith and church enriched her life; she was a member of Knox Church Choir (past president), Knox UCW and a member of the Jubilee Rebekah Lodge #14, Glace Bay. At one point, Linda taught Swedish weaving at both Knox and Gordon churches. Later in life quilting became Linda’s passion. She was a founding member of the Quarry Point Quilt Guild Society, a member of the Reserve Material Girl’s Quilt Group, Ocean Waves Quilt Guild Society and quilted at Quilting on the Mira. Linda so enjoyed these gatherings but even more, the many treasured friendships that she ‘quilted’.
At the opening of the Canso Causeway in 1955, Linda was presented with the American flag by Lady Grosvenor, Alexander Graham Bell’s daughter, to carry across the causeway. Fifty years later, 2005, Linda attended the commemoration of this historical event.
Following graduating from Cosmetology School in 1969, Linda worked at the Beauty Nook in Glace Bay for a few years before operating her own salon in her home for 24 years. She retired in 1994 because of ill health.
Linda is survived by her loving and caring husband, Ken; daughter, Shaunna (Jackie Snow) and son, Keith (Trish); grandchildren, Danielle, Brittany, Corey, Kaite (Mathew) and Matthew (Maggie); great-grandson, Parker Kramme; sister, Jean (Fred Hawkins); nieces, Kim (Richard Morris) and Kathy (Kathy Jaeger); cousins, Joan MacIntosh, Clayton Strickland and Janis Hickman Beverley (several cousins across Canada and the United States), and the Barretts; sisters-in-law, Ethel, Mae and Verda Mackenzie and brothers-in-law, Donald ‘Duck’ (Shirley), William (Florence); many nieces and nephews. Linda was also surrounded by many devoted friends.
Linda was predeceased by her mother and father, Russell and Corella (Herridge) Hickman, a son, Kenneth Troy and a grandson, Brendan Kramme.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. The celebration of Linda’s life will be held at Knox United Church Thursday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow.
Donations can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (designate Cancer Center) or Hospice Palliative Care Society.
