We regret to announce the passing of Miriam Poirier, 82, of Seaview Manor and a former longtime resident of Norwood Street, Glace Bay. Miriam passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ida (Kehoe) Cooke.
God gave Miriam a special gift of music at an early age and she was able to play piano and organ at many of the local churches. She was employed as a laboratory aid at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay. Miriam was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also known to have a great sense of humour.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Elmore) Cann and Sharlene, both in Glace Bay; two sons, Kevin (Marjory), Halifax, Clifford (Catriona), Coldbrook; one sister, Sr. Idella Cooke, Sisters of Charity, Halifax; six grandchildren, Kevin A., Colin (Tanya), Merika (Doug), Ryan (Nicole), Nicole, Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Emma, Riley, Callie and Jaydan; nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Cooke, Thunder Bay.
Miriam was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Poirier on Oct. 7, 2008, three brothers, Leo, Austin, Aloysius and six sisters, Margaret, Tillie, Edna, Sr. Eileen and two in infancy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church followed by a reception in the church foyer. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Reserve Mines. Fr. Norman McPhee and Fr. Everett McDow officiating.
As an expression of sympathy for Miriam, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Cancer Society, Palliative Care or Seaview Manor.
