It is with broken hearts and an undying love that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, brother and poppy Gordie Hickey, 63, on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Born in North Sydney, Gordie was a son of the late Pius and Emma (Hawley) Hickey.
Gordie was well-known in the community, being a member of the North Sydney Police Department, later with the Cape Breton Regional Police, retiring in 2011 after 32 years of service. In his spare time he enjoyed working in his garage, spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda (Tattrie) Hickey; his two sons, Sean Hickey, Jasper, Alta., and Michael (Amanda) Hickey, Sherwood Park, Alta.; two grandchildren, Liam and Branna; brothers, James 'Buck' (Alice) Hickey, Cecil (Cathy) Hickey, both of North Sydney; sisters, Mary (Bob) Faulkner, Pearl Allain, both of Hamilton, Ont., Ann (Bill) Hawkins, Mississauga, Ont., Betty (Carl) Roberts, Georges River, Viola (Melvin) Crewe, North Sydney, Joan (Gordon) Ferneyhough, Sydney Mines, Gladys (Lee) Fraser, Bridgewater; sister-in-law, Bev Hickey, Hamilton, Ont.; sister-in-law, Barb (Lorne) MacIntyre, Florence; brother-in-law, Paul Tattrie, Calgary, also by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gordie was predeceased by brothers, Joseph (Joyce), Robert 'Bobby', Pius 'Ike', an infant brother, Pius, a sister, Charlotte 'Dot' (Dan) MacKenzie, brother-in-law, Ulysse Allain, father and mother-in-law, Walter and Joan Tattrie, step-father-in-law, Raymond Tattrie.
Visitation for Gordie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
