John Winston Lafitte

Born: November 12th, 1941

Passed in: North Sydney
Passed on: August 3rd, 2014

It is with great sadness that we, the family of John Winston LaFitte, announce his passing on Aug. 3, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital. John was born in Sydney, Nov. 12, 1941 to John and Florence (nee MacInnis) LaFitte. He was raised and educated in Sydney, and lived in Yarmouth, Greenwood, Barrington Passage, Edmonton and Halifax before finally settling back in Sydney. He worked in a variety of capacities over the years but was primarily employed in bookkeeping and accounting.
He now rests peacefully in the arms of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He developed a Faith and love of God at an early age and it was this faith that later united he and his wife, Valerie Marsh, his soulmate of 30 years. They shared a deep love of God and each other.
He was known for his sense of humour (some may call it “wacky”) and brought laughter to those around him. No one could ever predict what he would say next - and he was loved for that. For many years, he wore a cowboy hat and boots and proclaimed that he “should have been born in Texas”. He loved singing country and western songs and songs unto his God. He was once told that he was an “annointed Hank Snow”. He would have wanted people to remember and celebrate him in humour.
John was a very talented guitarist and singer and was the focal point at many family gatherings. He was involved with numerous musical groups and choirs over the years and frequently entertained at community and seniors’ functions. His talents will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie Marsh; his daughter, Denene (John) Morgan of Moncton and her two sons, Devon and Dillon; his daughter Vanessa (Tom) Pierson of Ottawa, and his son, Samson Doyle of San Francisco. He is also survived by his sisters, Cathy (David Minsky) of Montreal, Pat (Chuck Drohan) of Sydney and Shelley (Don Morrison) of Sydney; a brother, Ron (Lynne Anne) of Sydney, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his mother-in-law, Sadie Marsh; a niece in infancy and his sister-in-law, Debbie Pastuck.
Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 8th, 2 p.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home, Alexandra Street, Sydney. A reception will follow after the service.
Charitable food bank donations in John’s name are welcome.
"Go rest high on that mountain
Son your work on earth is done
Wish I could see the angels’ faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing."
