It is with great sadness that the family of the late Leslie Coombs announce his passing on August 5, 2014 at the age of 93 years. Leaving behind his beloved wife of 60 years Jean (nee Lewis); three children: Dr. Heather Coombs, Bruce (Kimberley) Coombs and Brenda (Terry) Anstey; grandchildren: Andrea (Sean) Coombs, Matthew Coombs and Michael Anstey; sister Mary Baines; sister-in-law Verna (Tom) Corder. He also leaves to mourn a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth Coombs, Shoal Cove West, sister Nellie White and brothers Israel and Lambert Coombs. Many thanks to the health care workers at Corner Brook LTC for their compassionate care in his final years. A great debt of gratitude to his very special caregiver Edna Brake for her day-today support that was truly remarkable. Leslie was an educator for 41 years, retiring as District Superintendent of the Bay of Islands – St. Georges Integrated School Board. During his long career, he had a profound impact on the lives of many students. He served on the provincial executive of the NTA and also served as President of the NL Association of Superintendents of Education. Leslie was a Free Mason and member of the Corner Brook Lodge for 63 years. He was a founding member of the Grand Lodge of NL. He had a great love of music. He was also an avid outdoorsman. Leslie loved nothing more than a day on the river salmon fishing or a winter trek on his cross – country skies. The family received family and friends at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Mark’s Avenue on Thursday, August 7 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Main Street, Corner Brook with The Very Rev. Baxter Park officiating. As expressions of sympathy flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family guest book may be signed or a memorial donation may be made through our website www.fillatre.ca.
