Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: August 5th, 2014

Peter Thomas McVeigh, 89, of 99 Oceanview, Dominion, passed away, on to his heavenly family on Aug. 5, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Inverness, he was the eldest son of the late Michael and Rose (LeBlanc) McVeigh.
Peter was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a part of the battle for Normandy, where he was wounded as a 19 year old in August of 1944, in the Falaise Gap/Pocket. He did return to battle to help in the liberation of Holland.
After the war Peter joined the Seafarer’s International Union of North America travelling to parts around the world. He also worked as a lumberjack in Maine and on tugboats in Halifax Harbour before coming back to Cape Breton to settle down. For most of his family life he worked in correctional services. In 1986, Peter was awarded the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal. This was presented by the Lieutenant Governor for the Province of Nova Scotia and signed by the Governor General of Canada. He was a member of Branch 78 Legion (treasurer), Immaculate Conception Church (parish council) and a volunteer for St Vincent de Paul.
Dad always had an affinity for Inverness as well as Dominion. Most family vacations were in Inverness. He loved hunting, fishing, boxing and the Montreal Canadiens but most of all he loved family, both immediate and extended and he had many close friends who were like family. He always looked forward to his brandy at happy hour before supper. We will miss that special time with him.
Surviving are his two sons, Dennis (Barb), Sweaburg, Ont. and Sean, Edmonton, Alta. Peter had four grandchildren, Ryan, Kitchener; Caitlin, Toronto; Ashley, Edmonton; Michelle, Edmonton; one brother, Gerald (Carol), Dominion; one sister, Mary (Butch) Clinton, Ont.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life, our Mom, his wife, Anne (Sampson); brothers, Michael, James, Lawrence (Hopper) and sister, Rose MacNeil.
There will be no visitation as requested by Dad. There will be a Mass of Ressurrection celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. The Rev Daniel Boudreau will be officiating. The interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the palliative care, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 or a charity of your choice.
