Josie Fougere-MacDougall, 97 years of age, passed away peacefully at Sagewood Continuing care facility in Lower Sackville, N.S., on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014.
Josie was born in Frankville, N.S. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Levangie) Fougere.
The second youngest of 14 children, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Living many years in Sydney, Josie was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a loving wife and an entrepreneur. She was an active member in St. Anthony Daniel parish and a member of the CWL for more than 25 years. Following the death of her first husband in 1965 she moved back to Frankville and opened her own store called “Josie’s Dairy”. She ran it with great pride and success, from 1969-1974. At a time when women in business were rare, Josie acted as a role model for other women.
Josie leaves behind three sons, Robert (Sam Wilson), Halifax, Al (Darlene), Powell River, B.C. and Gerard, Vancouver, B.C. Also survived by her daughters, Betty (Gerald) MacDonald, Antigonish, Frances, Sydney, Annette (Jake MacKinnon) Parker, Stewiacke. Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Bessie (Andrew) Fougere, Havre Boucher, N.S. She leaves as well 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Ambrose Fougere in 1965 and her second husband, Rannie MacDougall in 1979. Her brothers, Mike, Hubert (Peggy), Howard, Andrew (Bessie) and John; sisters, Martha Sampson (Albert), Myra Forsythe, Irene Melong (Joe), Bertha and Mary Rita and Rita as well as two other siblings in infancy. Josie was also predeceased by sons-in-law, Roy Delorey (Annette), Murray Parker (Annette) and Bill McKinnon (Frances).
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the St. Paul’s Cente, Havre Boucher on Friday, Aug. 8, from 2-4 p.m. Followed by visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. Funeral service will take place at T.W. Parkview Chapel at 2pm with Fr. Charles Donovan officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Josie’s memory, to Manna for Health (Food Bank), 6233 Willow St., Halifax, N.S., B3L 1P1.
