It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lorne Serroul, our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Lorne died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late William and Isobel (Sutherland) Serroul.
In his earlier years, Lorne sailed aboard the Great Lake boats. He later worked as a senior engineer with Marine Atlantic until 2004, and had an active role in his union. He also owned and operated Englishtown Ridge Campground from 1992 to 1999.
Lorne considered himself a “jack of all trades” and always had a special project on the go.
He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Orangedale and fishing with his grandchildren.
In recent years Lorne was quite involved with the Cape Breton Cares Radiothon and appeared in many of the publications and advertisements in support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or and the Bras d'Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda (Iannetti) Serroul; a daughter, Melissa (Curtis), Georges River; a son, Lorne (Rosalee Pendergast), Bras d’Or; two grandchildren, Aiden and Reilly; two step-grandchildren, Ryan and Jewel; sisters, Vivian (Bill) Russell, Ontario, Regina (Milton) Reid, Big Bras d’Or, Sharon Serroul, Ontario; a brother, Leo Serroul, Ontario; by several nieces and nephews; two aunts, Delores Howard, Leona Carroll; an uncle, Leonard Sutherland.
Lorne will also be missed by his in-laws and members of the Iannetti family.
Besides his parents, Lorne was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Delores, Elizabeth and Mary Linda.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care of Cape Breton or the Cancer Centre c/o the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
