John George was predeceased by his darling “Pie in the Sky” daughter, Deborah.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Jean, sister, Florence (in infancy), brothers-in-law, Albert Kavanaugh and Howard Kennedy.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie (Carter), formerly of Francois, N.L.; son, George Alexander, who was his heart and right hand; brother, Seward (Geraldine Lahey); sisters, Isabel Kennedy and Shirley Kavanaugh; and many nieces and nephews, who were so special to him.
John George was born with a wit, second to none and a heart that enfolded those he met with love, joy and caring. He had a great gift of love for stories and details.
John George had a multitude of friends and he held the “senate” in his beloved garage. Following several careers in business, he worked for Lewis & Co. for 14 years. In 1974, he became town superintendent, until 1995, when he became supervisor for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, District 1, retiring in 1999, to become a real live miracle, something he never forgot. John George gave so much of himself to others, he had little left for himself. His great love of people and Louisbourg kept him busy and he held many posts.
John George was past president of the Navy League of Canada, the District 1 Economic Society and until 1995, Cape Breton West Division of the Nova Scotia Liberal Association for 10 years. He was a founding member of Enterprise Louisbourg and in 1990, John George founded the Louisbourg Ambulance Association. He served on the school board, the board of directors for the Credit Union and at the age of 24, was the youngest member to ever sit on the Louisbourg Town Council. John George was a fireman with the Louisbourg Volunteer Fire Department and also chairman of the fire works committee, member of the Harbour Authority of Louisbourg, the Masonic Lodge #80 and Zion Presbyterian Church.
A service to celebrate John George’s life will be held at Zion Presbyterian Church on Friday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Following the service, a reception will take place at Calvin Memorial Hall, Upper Warren Street.
