Dorothy Ruth Gillis
Born In: Iron Mines
Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: August 18th, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy on Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, in palliative care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Dorothy was a loving wife to Iver for 66 years, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Dorothy was born on June 25, 1927 and grew up in Iron Mines.
Throughout Mom’s life, she enjoyed camping and hearing news of friends and family. Her joy was hosting family, knitting cozy socks, baking her famous shortbread, talking with her best friend, Jean MacKay, and caring for her loving little dog, Maggie.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Iver; children, Beverley (Dave) Kennedy, Coxheath, Bobby (Elizabeth) Gillis, Cole Harbour and Wendy Richardson, Halifax. She was predeceased by her son, Gary. Gram was so proud of her seven grandchildren, Jody (Ken), Duggan (Jenn), Jeff, Lauren (Adam), Robert (Tara), Kenzie (Grant), and Holly (Jolon) and her six great-grandchildren, Lila, Allie, Rachel, Brady, Lucy and Rowan.
Dorothy’s wish was cremation, a funeral service and no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, 1524 King’s Road. We welcome you to join us at a reception in the church hall following the service. Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
The family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful care Dorothy received from Dr. Greg Myatt and the nursing staff.
Online condolences may be sent to the Gillis family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.com or email sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
A Mother’s Love
There’s no power like it on this earth.
No treasure equal to its worth.
The gift of a Mother’s love.
