We regret to announce the passing of Allan James MacNeil on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Allan was the eldest son of the late Allan and Catherine (Brown) MacNeil of Sydney Mines.
Allan grew up and went to school in Sydney Mines and later attended Cape Breton Business College and CBU. He worked for 16 years as office manager for Leonard Construction and following it's closure to present day, he was employed by Risk Management Services (RMS) as a specialist in loss control, a job which he dearly loved and which took him to every corner of Cape Breton where he met many interesting people.
Allan was an amazing man of great intelligence who loved quiet times at home, tinkering with his car, playing his guitar, which he taught himself in recent years. He was an avid music lover, The Rolling Stones being his lifetime favourite band, who he had the pleasure of seeing twice live. He also loved reading and was a member of the Military Collectors Society.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Marilyn (MacIntosh); one daughter, Alana (C.J.) Pierce of Fort Frances, Ont.; one son, Mark (Angela) of Halifax; his pride and joy, his two grandsons, Jacoby and Luthor Pierce; brothers, Brian, Edmonton, Alta., Hugh (Michele), Millcreek, David (Cindy), Sydney Mines, Blake, Edmonton, Alta.; one sister, Maria (Gerry) Walsh, Sydney Mines and his mother-in-law, Theresa MacIntosh, Sydney; sister-in-law, Dianne (Chester) Collier, Montreal; brothers-in-law, Peter (Rosella) MacIntosh, Pt. Aconi and Stephen (Lisa) MacIntosh, Howie Center. Allan will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and by his special neighbors, Mildred and Cyril MacLean as well as friends, Brian Lewis and Harold LeBlanc.
He was predeceased by both his maternal and paternal grandparents, James and Lavinia Brown and Hugh and Elizabeth MacNeil.
Visitation for the late Allan MacNeil will be held from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29 at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations in memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or the Canadian Red Cross.
