Ida Munroe

MUNROE, Ida Doris – 93 of Pictou passed away, peacefully, at the Shiretown Nursing Home on August 30, 2014. Born on Pictou Island, she was a daughter of the late George & Christina (Whiteway) Rankin. As a young woman, Ida worked in the fish factory on Pictou Island and later operated the island switchboard for Maritime Tel. & Tel. Ida served her community in various musical capacities playing guitar, autoharp, banjo and mouth organ. She also lent her beautiful alto voice to choir and other musical endeavors. Ida loved quilting, hooking mats and gardening. However, her greatest joy was derived from sewing love into the lives of her family. The result is a beautiful tapestry of lives tightly woven together by the careful stitches of their matriarch. Ida Doris. She is survived by daughters, Frances McGrath, Pictou; and Beth (Jonathan) Knock, Stellarton; grandchildren, Troy Rankin; Nick Munroe; Shawn McGrath; Stephanie McGrath-Basit; Sherri MacInnis; Colin & Luke Knock; great grandchildren, Martin McGrath; Nolan, Grace and Laila MacInnis; Petra Rankin, and Cohen Munroe. Ida is also survived by nieces, Florence (Vincent) Heighton; Doris (Keith MacDonald); and nephews, Donald Livingstone; Elwood (Joan) Rankin; daughter in law, Darlene Munroe. Ida was predeceased by her husband, Charles; son, Sandy; daughter Shirley Rankin; granddaughter, Tammy Rankin; numerous brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Monday in the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will be at 2 PM on Tuesday in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Jacquie Ross officiating. Burial will be in the Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada.
