Cecil Hickey

HICKEY, CECIL - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Cecil Lawrence Hickey, age 88, which occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB on August 30, 2014. Born on June 11, 1926 in Nash Creek, NB, he was the son of the late Fred and Olive Hickey (Lapointe). Cecil is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Merilda (Guitard) Hickey: their children, Linda Knowles (Darryl). Janeville, NB; Gerald Hickey, Fredericton, NB; Wanda Langley, Oakville, ON; Norma Losier (Michel), Fredericton, NB; grandchildren, Angela Knowles and Kelsey Knowles-Wynn, Brody Langley, Danielle and Mathieu Losier; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Paul, Louis, Leo and Fred, sisters, Agnes and Eugenie. Cecil was employed with the Canadian International Paper Company for 17 years before beginning his career with the Province of New Brunswick in Property Assessment in 1966. After 25 years of dedicated service, he retired at the age of 65 as Executive Director of Assessment, NB Geographic Information Corporation. Cecil was a member of St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church and volunteered for various charities and organizations. He was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus for over 40 years, receiving the honours of The Forth Degree on April 1, 2006. Cecil and his wife Merilda were inseparable and their love and devotion to each other was unwavering. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, who adored him immensely. He took great delight in playing cards, listening to music, dancing, curling, bowling, and playing his accordion. He will be greatly missed every day.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Friday, September 5th, at 12:00pm, followed by reception at St. Dunstan’s Monsignor Boyd Center. Father Bill Brennan will officiate. Interment will be in the Hermitage Cemetery, Woodstock Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.
