SWEENY – Col. John Richard “Dick” – age 92, of Veterans Place, Yarmouth, passed away in Veterans Place on September 1, 2014. Born in Yarmouth, N.S. on May 17, 1922 he was a son to the late Vernon and Mabel (Millard) Sweeny. Dick was a Veteran who went overseas to England in 1941 and returned in 1945. Upon return home he started his own business consisting of upholstering and auctioneering called Sweeny’s Furniture and Upholstery. Dick had a passion for driving and restoring antique cars and was the founder of the Yarmouth Antique Car Club in 1960. Dick and Alma drove a 1915 Model T Ford across Canada in 1975 and took a curved disk Olds and entered the London to Brighton run in 1980. In his spare time he enjoyed skating, swimming and dancing and he even built a log cottage on Sloan’s Lake. He was a member of Beacon United Church, member of the IOOF Lodge and Rotary Club . He is survived by daughter, Victoria (George) Ryder, Yarmouth; son, Stanley (Freda Hanf), Darlings Lake; brother, Pat (Patricia) Burlington, ON; sister, Sue Black (Clifford), Calgary, Alta; grandchildren, Shawn Ryder, Tom Sweeny, Jeffery Sweeny, Steven Sweeny, Michelle Sweeny and 5 great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by wife, Alma M. Sweeny; son, J.R. Sweeny “Skip”;brothers, Vern, Robert, Ken, Phillip; sisters, Marie Trimper, Ruth Chisholm. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. There was no visitation by family request. A graveside service took place Friday, September 5, 2014 at 2:00pm from Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery, David Sollows officiated. Donations in Dick’s memory may be made to the Yarmouth Food Bank.
