Herman Van Hattem - 72, of Shannex-Orchard Court, Kentville, formerly of Weston, Kings County has gone to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2014. Born on August 8, 1942 in Wapenveld, The Netherlands, he was a son of Anna (van Boven) Van Hattem, Shannex-Orchard Court, Kentville, and the late Rudy Van Hattem. He lived in Wapenveld until immigrating to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1960. He worked and lived in Ontario from 1962-1966, marrying Ida Boersma in 1963. They then settled in Weston, where he owned and operated a dairy farm from 1966-2012, where he was active until his stroke in 2001. He lived for farming and was involved with numerous agricultural boards and committees, including being a former member of the board of directors of Baxter's. He had a deep rooted faith with a love for Jesus Christ, his Saviour and was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville and was one of the founders of the Kings County Christian School, Cambridge. He loved nature and wildlife and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and keeping his property neat and tidy. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Herman also had a heart for those in need. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Ida Boersma; three daughters, Caroline (Robert) Carree, Berwick; Teresa (Arnold) Twijnstra, Prince Edward Island; Yvonne Van Hattem (Brad Schurman), Woodville; three sons, Hendrik (Sheila), Aylesford; Randy (Rhonda), Grafton; Andrew (Hilde), Aylesford; two sisters, Miep (Wim) Palm, The Netherlands; Kathy (Peter) Hartenhof, Woodville; three brothers, Henk (Irene), Cambridge; Rudy (Alice), Woodville; Dick (Diane), New Brunswick; 19 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family burial was held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville, Pastor Bert VanderBeek officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Shannex-Orchard Court for the kindness, care and compassion shown to Herman while he resided there. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
