Age 89, Sydney, Cape Breton, after several years of battling Alzheimers passed away peacefully in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Sept. 2, 2014.
Born and raised in Sydney, C.B., she was the daughter of the late Paul and Sadie (Campbell) Short.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Peggy Timbs and Angela Andrews, both who lived in Ontario and granddaughter, Kylie Gallagher.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bruce (recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary); sister, Pauline Cusack and seven children, Paul and Carol (Francis), Frank and Gail (Boutiler), Verola and Findlay (Morrison), Kelly and Lisa (Simm), Bruce and Colleen (Gillis), Brent and Caroline (Scattolon) and Peter and Susie (Park). Gert was the proud and loving grandmother of 19 grandchildren, Jacqueline (Chad), Brittany, Blake, Bruce, Allysa, Brett (Megan), Linnea, Brock, Quinn, Dylan, Lydia, Leah, Kate, Carson, Logan Brianna, Julia, Cassidy and Kansas.
Gert was a long time, dedicated member of the Catholic Women’s League at Our Lady of Fatima Church and a devoted volunteer in her community. She was an avid participant in her beloved bridge club and known to most of her family and friends as an incredible host with a witty sense of humour.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel at 755 George Street during the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7th. Gert’s farewell for her family and friends will take place on Monday, Sept. 8th at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Kings Road, Sydney River. Reception to follow in the church hall.
