It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of William Frederick Almon, age 90, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Georges River, Fred was the son of the late William and Annie (Young) Almon. Fred was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or. Fred was an employee of Shaw Brick Company and also worked for a number of years in Ontario. Fred was most loved for his dry, witty sense of humour. He enjoyed company and his evening visits next door to his sister-in-law, Margaret, for tea and lunch with the family. He had a great passion for his 4-wheeler and enjoyed his drives each day on it.
Fred is survived by his sister, Grace Almon, North Sydney; sister-in-law Margaret (MacIntyre) Almon, Georges River; his loving nephew and caregiver, Gene Almon and niece and caregiver, Laura Anne Almon, both of Georges River, as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret (Ron) Dinn, Mary (Frank) Giorno, Katie (John) Cameron, Pauline (Bill) Myles, Liza (Herb) Burt and Emmaline Gallant; his brothers, Boyd, Joseph, Murdock, Leo, Frank and James Almon.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass for Fred will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Parish Cemetery or a charity of choice.
