Ed Friesen

Passed on: August 31st, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Daniel Friesen of Gull Lake, Sk on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the Regina General Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Keitha; sons Duane of Swift Current, and Darren (Vanessa) of Saskatoon, Sk; grandsons Wyatt, Dalton, and Chase of Saskatoon; brothers, Herman (Sandy) of Swift Current, George (Sharon) of Swift Current, Clarence (Susan) of Edmonton, Ab, and Harvey (Irene) of Rimby, Ab; sister Martha (Dave) Neufeld of Dedsbury, Ab; brothers-in-law Peter Thiessen of Herbert, and Howard Couch of Gull Lake; sister-in-law Coralie Brodie; and many, many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Wilhelm and Lena Friesen of Herbert; sisters, Lillian Thiessen of Herbert, and Doris Stevens of Calgary, Ab; nephews, Travis Brodie of Gull Lake, and Stan Friesen of Rimby, Ab; brother-in-law Ken Couch of Gull Lake; and sister-in-law Gloria Couch of Gull Lake. Ed was born and raised in Herbert, Sk. He left home at an early age, and went into the Grain Buying business, first with Federal Grain, and then with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and he was the manager in Gull Lake for a number of years. It was here that he met Keitha (later to become his wife). This wedding was the first performed in this brand new church. Ed had two sons that he was very proud of, Duane of Swift Current, and Darren (Vanessa) of Saskatoon. He has three wonderful little grandsons who were the joy of his life, Wyatt, Dalton, and Chase. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, and he collected an impressive collection of sports memorabilia over the years. He coached the boys ball teams for a number of years, going as far as provincial finals three times. He was an avid curler, golfer and bowler (going to the nationals in bowling in 2006 in Saskatchewan 55+ games) which was held in Portage La Prairie, Mb. When the grandsons would come they would hardly get through the door, when Wyatt would say "Lets go to the golf course Grandpa" and they would spend many hours out on the course, and Dalton loved to play "Fly Away Peter, Fly Away Paul" with his Grandpa. He was a Masonic Lodge member, and a member of the Eastern Star Lodge, he was on the church board, curling board, bowling association board, and was a volunteer fire fighter for many years. After he retired, he loved to go out and help some of the farmers at seeding and harvest times, Bill and Rob Toney, Steve Small, Tim and Harold Dutton, and Don Connick. He even helped Norma fix a house for her cats. He took up Old Time Dancing and made many friends in Shaunavon, Sk and Maple Creek, Sk. Playing Whist was another favorite, and we played many a game with Al and Stella Countryman. He also liked to read (even read the Bible through once), playing on the computer, woodworking, and watching the Blue Jays, his favorite team on TV. His failing health caused him to quit most of these things and if Ed had pain at times, he never complained. If someone asked him "How are you?" Oh I am fine was his reply. Ed will be missed greatly by his family and friends. The Memorial Service was held on September 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Knox United Church with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. The Interment Service will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lung Association, or to the Kidney Foundation.
