It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother , sister and aunt Ruth K. (Dakin) Adair, 89, on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Ruth was born March 23, 1925, in Malden, Mass., the second eldest daughter of the late Charles and Helena (Kendall) Dakin.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney.
In her earlier years she loved to sing and play the guitar and sang on CJCB Radio to entertain the troops overseas. She is noted for her own composition “The Fate of the Caribou” written when she was just 17 years old, during the Second World War for the sinking of the ship the Caribou, off the coast of Newfoundland in 1942. The composition is preserved to this day on a 78 record with the song she wrote for her husband Stewart Adair “He’s my Curley Headed Baby” on the other side. She married the love of her life Stewart Adair, Nov. 1, 1943. To this union were two daughters Ruth and Lorraine.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Tillmar, Hardisty, Alberta, and Lorraine Adair at home; granddaughter Heather (Stephen) Brown and great-granddaughter Georgia Brown, both of B.C.; two sisters, Edna Dakin Porter, Elliott Lake, Ont., Helena Mason, Toronto, Ont.; sister-in-law Vera Dakin, Oromocto, N.B. and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Stewart Adair in 1980, eldest sister Elva Lott (1998), her only brother Robert Dakin (2004), grandson Shawn Tillmar (2004), son-in-law Gilbert Tillmar (2012), brothers-in-law James Lott, Phil Mason and Colin Porter.
No visitation by request. A funeral service will be held Friday 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorials donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Residents Council of Taigh Solas, Northside General Hospital or charity of choice.
