Shirley Marie Bennett

Born In: Glace Bay

Shirley Marie Bennett of Kings Road, Dominion, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family at her side.
Mom was born in Glace Bay, the daughter of the late John A. and Elizabeth (McIntyre) MacNeil and attended Saint Anne’s School in Glace Bay.
Mom was a devoted Catholic and an active member of the Immaculate Conception parish. One of Mom’s fondest memories was when a group from the area made a trip to Saint Anne de Beaupre in Quebec City.
Mom was also very active in the community whether volunteering at the hospital or her 20-year association with Saint Vincent de Paul. She liked to help others and was always making sure their needs were met. Whether a kind word or a gesture Mom made you feel special.
She loved to stay active skating several times a week, playing cards with her many friends or sitting down with a good book, were all special to Mom.
Mom was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She always looked forward to seeing “the kids from New Brunswick.”
Survived by her children, Adrian Bennett (Nancy), Hampton, Cathy Blanchard (Carl), Saint John, Kevin Bennett (Lori), Saint John; grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan, Jillian, Kyle, Ashley, Courtney; great-grandchild, Scarlett; sisters, Cathy Marco, California, Audrey Ryan, Toronto; and brother, John MacNeil (Maurena), Sydney River; and many nieces and nephews. A great friend over the years was her cousin Rosie and will always have a special place her heart.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Reginald Bennett and her sister, Patricia O’Neill.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, with visitation on Monday, Sept. 15, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 16th, 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception in Bridgeport.
