It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Joan Cairns on Sept. 12, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Auburn, N.S. she was the daughter of Mrs. Florence (Moores) Walker (North Sydney) and the late Hollis Crummey.
She was employed with Sobeys (Sydney River) for over 30 years until her retirement. Joan loved the simple pleasures of life; family and friends. In her spare time she enjoyed making stain glass ornaments.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Amy J. Cairns, Houston, Texas; companion and best friend, Terry Campbell; brother, Wayne (Janice) Crummey. Howie Centre, and stepbrother, David Williams, Mulgrave. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Williams, Howie Centre; aunts and uncles: Dianne Costie, Ronald (Lillian) Moore Sr., Jack (Rita) Moores, Clyde (Dorothy) Moores and Helen Crummey.
Predeceased by her stepfather, Charlie Williams, and uncle, Wayne Costie. Joan will be dearly missed by her many family and friends from across N.S., P.E.I., Ontario, B.C. and Newfoundland.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., in Sydney. A memorial service in celebration of her life will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment to follow in Alfred E. Smith Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
