It is with heartfelt sadness and disbelief that we, the family of Alice Margaret (MacCormack) Marsh, announce her passing on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in North Sydney, on March 30, 1934, Alice was the daughter of the late John J. 'Dee' and Mae (Carter) MacCormack. She grew up in North Sydney, and as a young adult began working at Rahey's Grocery Store. During this time, Alice met her husband Ivan, and went on to be a proud stay-at-home mother of eight children. Throughout her mid-life Alice was an active member of her community, making many of her acquaintances and friends. She worked as a lunch lady at Mill Creek School and was a contributing member of: the Mill Creek Home and School Association, the executive for the Bras d'Or Seniors and Pensioners Club, and an Honorary Member of the Point Aconi Road Community Development Association. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Parish, Bras d'Or.
Alice’s happiest moments were shared with her family and friends. She abundantly loved and devoted herself to others, making her a remarkable mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Alice created a loving family with Ivan and her children: Cathy King, Nancy (Alan) MacDonald, Darrell (Charlene), Brian (Glenda), Denise (Peter) Fritz, Paul (Lori), and Corri (Billy) Erickson. Alice was blessed with 15 grandchildren: Corrina (Paul) St. Cyr, Elise (Jon) Clow, Matthew King, Michael (Amanda) King, Lynette (Darryl) Sampson, Madison MacDonald, Megan Marsh, Erin (Dwayne) Marsh, Kayla (Brent) Dempster, Joshua Fritz, Laura (Jeff) Hanna, Taylor and Genevieve Marsh, MacKenzie and Olivia Erickson. In addition, Alice was a cherished great-grandmother to 14 great-grandchildren: Riley, Samantha, Jess, Emma-Rose, Sophia, Lincoln, Felix, Amarah, Asher, Austin, Grace, Ethan, Landon and Lila. Alice is survived by her siblings, Catherine 'Kay' Rutledge, B.C., Dan (Colleen) MacCormack, Ont., son-in-law, Brian Keeping, North Sydney; sister-in-law, Frances MacCormack, Halifax, Margaret Hamilton, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Johnny Sandluck, Mill Creek, Winston MacDonald, Sydney, Melvin Marsh, Ont. and Joseph L Marsh, Halifax.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, Ivan in 1997; daughter, Ann Keeping; son-in-law, Pius King; brothers, Albert, Angus and sisters, Mary and Edith Ann.
There will never be enough words to describe the person Mom was and the inspiring life she led. She was an amazing mom; full of fire, humour, strength, and deep love for those around her. Mom can rest easy knowing the legacy she left behind through her children. They do not just carry the family name but the love and support for each other that is rarely found within families. They live for each other and showed their unbounded love and support for Mom through their actions up to her last moments.
We, the family, would like to thank Dr. Ansari, the nurses of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ER and ICU departments, her family doctor Andrew Wawer, and the Cape Breton County Homemakers Agency; a service she held dear.
Visitation for Alice Marsh will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014 at the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian Burial to be held Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, St. Joseph's Parish in Bras d'Or at 10:30 a.m., Father Peter McLeod Officiating.
Donations can be made in honour of Alice's great-grandchild, Samantha St. Cyr, to the Pediatrics Unit via the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
"If Roses Grow in Heaven
If roses grow in Heaven Lord
Please pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my Mother's arms
and tell her they're from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
Place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for a while.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
But there is an ache within my heart
That will never go away".
