Ian Robert Cameron passed away on Sept.19, 2014 in the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow at the age of 92. Ian was born in Antigonish, his parents being the late Alexander D. Cameron and the late Elsie C. Croft. He moved to New Glasgow in 1940 and has been a resident since that time.
Ian was a member of St Andrews Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, NS a member of session for 40 years plus, retired Sunday School Superintendent, a past member and Chairman of the Board of Managers, a past member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Representative Elder and member of the choir.
When he came to New Glasgow he went to work for Maritime Steel Foundries, serving in various capacities while there, in 1969 he went to work for Hawker Siddeley Canada Ltd., Trenton Works, as Supervisor of Welding, retiring in 1987. After his retirement he took an appointment with the Federal Business Development Bank as a Case Worker. The following year he went with the Canadian Welding Bureau as a representative covering Eastern Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, retiring in October 2003. He was a past president of the Canadian Welding Society, Nova Scotia Branch. Ian was a veteran of WW II enlisting in 1942 and discharging in 1946. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Choir of Pictou County. He served in England, France (D-Day plus 21) Belguim, Holland and Germany. While his children were attending elementary school, he took a great interest in the Home and School Associations and was a Past President of Temperence Street School Association and Pictou County Home and School Association. He served 2 years on the Pictou County District Planning Commission Advisory Committee for the Town of New Glasgow. He was a member of Albion Masonic Lodge, served as District Deputy Grand Master for one year, was Secretary for that Lodge for 10 years plus, was a member of the Scottish Rite, in Lodges Victoria Lodge of Perfection, Keith Sovereign Chapter Rose Croix and the Nova Scotia Sovereign Consistory. He was a member of the Stellarton Male Chorus. In early years he was interested in the Christopher Leadership Training Program and was an instructor for some years. Being of Scottish Decent and a student of that history, he was instrumental in organizing the Nova Scotia Chapter of Clan Cameron Association of Canada. He served as the first president and took the charter to Scotland for signing by the Chief of Clan Cameron, Sir Donald Cameron of Lochiel, K.T. He also served as president of Clan Cameron of Canada for several years and at the time of his death was President Emeritus of the Association. He was a member of the Saint Andrew’s Society of New Glasgow and is a Past President of the Society.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Johnston Fraser, the only daughter of the late John D. and Margaret Fraser of Broadway, Pictou County; son, John Alexander “Sandy” and wife Jane, Dartmouth; grandson Jeffrey (Emily), Halifax; granddaughters Sarah and Megan, Dartmouth; sisters Grace, Lochaber; Janet, Milton; brother-in-law James F. Fraser, Broadway.
He was predeceased by a daughter Margaret Christine in 1984, brothers Donald, Thomas and Allister.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Keith Humphrey officiating assisted by Rev. Dr. Kenneth MacLeod. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Kenzieville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Ian may be made to the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow or a charity of your choice.
