Joy Winton

WINTON, NELDA - 1928 – 2014 - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nelda Joy Winton, 86, of Fredericton, on Thursday, September 25th, 2014 at Pine Grove Nursing Home. Joy was the daughter of the late Chipman and Louisa (Ellis) Glendenning. Joy is survived by her loving and devoted husband of over 66 years, William A. Winton. Joy was born in Canobie N.B. on September 3rd, 1928, the youngest of five children, where she lived until her family moved into Bathurst for her to attend high school. She worked as a secretary at Bathurst Power and Paper and also at Northern Machine Works. She chose to leave her employ to become a homemaker full-time, a position in which she took the greatest pride. While raising their three children she fully supported Bill in his career and was actively involved in the children’s activities, community and church organizations including holding the position of president of Home and School for several years. She was a member of First United Church. She loved spending time at the cottage in Salmon Beach each summer, taking great pleasure in walking along the shores of the Bay of Chaleur. When their children left the nest, she and Bill moved to Fredericton where they began the next chapter of their lives. She joined St. Paul’s United Church, attending services and Bible study. Following Bill’s retirement in 1989 they both became active in delivering Meals on Wheels. Joy was a Red Cross Friendly Visitor to the elderly as well as a volunteer at Pine Grove Nursing Home. Even as her memories faded she still took pleasure in reading, doing crosswords, gardening, listening to the birds and spending time enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Joy was the last surviving member of her immediate family, predeceased by her brother, Clinton Glendenning, and three sisters: Elizabeth Glendenning, Venetia Gillis and Mildred Beattie. Left with cherished memories are: daughter Sandy (Brent) Conrad of Cole Harbour, N.S. and their children: Timothy, Jordan and Macy; daughter Lori (John) Ferguson of Coldstream, Ont., along with their children: Titus (Rachel) Ferguson, Margaret (Andrew) Bond, Edward and Emily Ferguson; and son Daniel (Eileen) of Moncton N.B. and her children: Charles and Charlene Cizek. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Phoebe Bond, many nieces and nephews. For the last eight years, Joy received loving care and wonderful companionship from Emily Dalley, who has become a dear family friend. We are grateful to have had Emily walk this journey with us.
The body will rest at Elhatton’s Funeral Home, St. George St., (www.elhatton.com) Bathurst. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 28, 2014 from 7 to 9pm. A celebration of Joy’s life will be take place on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 2pm from the First United Church, St. Patrick St. Burial will follow in the Spruce Grove Cemetery. For anyone wishing to send tokens of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to the SPCA, the Alzheimer’s Society, or to a favourite charity.
