Johanna Jessie MacKenzie, 96, West Bay, Inverness Co., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 on which would have been her and Duncan John's 74th wedding anniversary, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Whycocomagh, on March 1, 1918, she was a daughter of the late John Hector and Sadie (Gillis) MacLean.
She was the second oldest of 14 children, she spent her early years growing up on Crammond Islands (MacLean Island). Johanna was an active member of the West Bay United Church; she was a charter member of the UCW West Bay United Church; a founding member of the Strait Richmond Hospital Advisory Committee; founding member of the Head of the Lake Seniors Club. She was a lifetime member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Starlight Chapter# 66; for many years she was the Postmistress at West Bay.
Johanna was very active in the community, attending church events and card plays. Johanna is survived by her daughter, Beverly Leonard, West Bay;
sons, Ivan (Vicki) , Lime Hill; Wayne, West Bay Road; Steven (Joan), Fredericton, N.B.; sister, Jean Swiston, Huntsville, Ont.; brother, Allan Hector
'Bud' MacLean, Sydney; also leaving to mourn are 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Duncan John; sons, Sheldon and John 'Kenneth'; son-in-law, Lawrence Leonard; siblings, Margaret, Lillie, Douglas, Neil, Harvey, Verda, Ian, Bernice, Everett, Fraser and Sidney.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m.
Saturday, with an Eastern Star service to take place at 6:30 p.m. both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in West Bay United Church with Nan Corrigan, DM officiating. Burial to follow in Lime Hill Cemetery. A reception to follow the burial in West Bay Community Center.
Family Flowers only please. Donations in memory of Johanna may be made to the Strait Richmond Advisory Board or a charity of one's choice.
