Vernon M  Parrett

It is with sadness that we must announce the passing of Vernon "Vern" M Parrett, age 90, of Amherst. Vern passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, October 2, 2014.
Born in Stellarton, NS, he was a son of the late Wiliam and Amelia (MacKay) Parrett.
Vern graduated from Stellarton High School in June 1939. Served in the West Indies, Ireland and England as Wireless Operator (Air Gunner in the Royal Air Force). Coastal Command from 1942 to 1945 with rank of Flying Officer. He received a Business Education in Accounting from Maritime Business College, Halifax in 1946 and a diploma in Public Administration from the Institute of Public Affairs, Dalhousie University in 1969. He was employed with Nova Scotia Provincial Affairs Department prior to coming to Amherst as Deputy Town Clerk in 1950. He served as Town Clerk, Chief Administrator Officer from 1953 until his retirement in 1985.
Both Vern and his wife Anne were avid golfers, having been members in the Amherst Golf Course and the Northumberland Links. He had the unique achievement of a hole in one at both golf courses.
He was past president of the Municipal Finance Officers Association (1596); Past president and Life Member of the Association of Municipal Administrators; Life Member of the American Waterworks Association; Past president of the Amherst Kinsmen Club (1958); Past District secretary, Kinsmen Association; Member of the Amherst Rotary Club; Life Member of the Amherst Township Historical Society and Life Member of 105 Wing, Air Force Association of Canada.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Anne of Amherst, their daughter Jo-Ann (Corey) Sigut, Amherst; grandchildren Craig (Lorie), Halifax and Kelly (Dennis) Beardsley, Amherst; great grandson Matthew Vernon Sigut, Halifax and sister Vivian Becker, Calgary, AB.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 2 pm, Rev. Nigel Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery.
