LITTLE HARBOUR – Harry Campbell Ferguson, age 92, of Little Harbour, passed away Friday, October 3, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth (MacKenzie) Ferguson.
Harry attended New Glasgow High School and Maritime Business College. He worked for a short time with the CNR Hotel System in Charlottetown, PEI. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in the North Atlantic on convoy duty and on D-Day on June 6, 1944. Harry worked for the Unemployment Insurance Commission from September 1945 until September 1966, when he became Manager of the Canada Pension Plan for mainland NS until he retired in 1979. He was a county councillor for 2 terms and recreation co-ordinator for the Municipality of Pictou County from 1980 to 1983. He served on the board of Valley View Villa for 19 years. He was the first Fire Chief of the Little Harbour Fire Department in 1958 and still belonged to the Department at the time of his death. He was active in sports and played high school hockey, rugby, junior hockey, senior hockey, curling, softball and baseball. He was Past President of the New Glasgow Kinsmen Club and Little Harbour Community Centre. He was a member of Normandy Branch, Royal Canadian Legion and the Admiral Murray R.C.N.A. He was a member of the Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, where he was former Clerk of Session and Church Treasurer. He sang in the Little Harbour Church Choir, Barbershop Chorus and as a soloist.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by sisters: Lottie and Maude; brothers; John and Herbert; daughter-in-law, Catherine (Walsh) Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma (Baird); sons: Robert N., Little Harbour; James W., Saint John, NB; grandson, Ryan; granddaughters: Carly, Ashley, Katelyn and Jennifer (Bill) Jeffers; great-grandson, Wyatt Jeffers; great-granddaughter, Hailey Jeffers.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday in Little Harbour Presbyterian Church with Rev. Pat Rose officiating. Burial will be in Church Brook Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or a charity of choice.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 New Glasgow and the Admiral Murray Royal Canadian Naval Association will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Monday to conduct their service.
