It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bernie Anthony Henry on Oct. 6, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Eddie and Mary (McMillan) Henry.
Bernie was an avid reader. He also enjoyed going bowling with friends and he loved dancing.
After being faced with an unthinkable diagnosis Bernie handled living without his legs with resilience and humour, he commented “they are only legs, I have the love and support of my family and that’s everything”. His bravery was just one of the things that made his family so proud.
Bernie is survived by his sons, Eddie (Lisa), Oshawa, Ont., Peter (Shannon), New Castle, Ont.; daughter, Agnes Henry, Oshawa, Ont.; sisters, Carol Ann (Gordie) Martell, Edwina (Duane) Vardy, Sheila (Dougie) Leadbeater, all of New Waterford and Jocie (Alex) Lynk, Ont. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Neil Henry.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a funeral mass on Oct. 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery followed by a reception at the Army, Navy & Air Force, Smith Street. All are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s memory can be made to the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit.
