It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Russell Bernard 'Durango' Petrie, 80, of Scotchtown, on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Patrick and Amanda (Schroder) Petrie.
Durango was a miner for over 40 years and a volunteer firefighter with Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, New Waterford.
Durango was an avid bowler who was proud of his 411 score. He enjoyed horseshoes, hunting, fishing, playing tarabish, camping in Inverness and Sangaree. Durango was also a loyal Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and Eagles fan. Papa/Pa/Poppy's greatest joy was his grandchildren and he never missed any of their sports or activities.
Durango was also known as a handy-man who wasn't afraid to tackle any project at any time. He will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Faye (MacArthur); daughter Kathy (Gerard) MacNeil; sons, Derrick (Francie) and Harry (Kerri-Lou); sister Dorothy Scott; grandchildren, Ashley (KJ), Amanda, Billy, Calie, Hannah, Braydon and Waylon; great-granddaughter, Freya.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son Russie, brothers, Earl, John, Rudy and Wally, sisters, Jackie and Amelia.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Plummer Avenue immediately following the funeral mass.
The KOC will assemble for a prayer service in the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
