James Richard Gormley

GORMLEY, JAMES RICHARD - The death of J. Richard “Dick” Gormley occurred peacefully on October 11th, 2014 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital with family by his side. Born in Saint John on December 5, 1922, he was the son of the late John P. and Katherine (Gallant) Gormley, and husband to Mary (Nagle) Gormley. Dick was educated at St. Peter’s Boys School and St. Vincent’s High School graduating in 1939. After receiving a medical discharge from the Army, Dick joined the CNR in 1941 where he was employed in various capacities in the freight division and in the Superintendents office in Saint John & Moncton. After 10 years, Dick transferred to Trans-Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) which in 1951 was in the process of moving operations from Pennfield Ridge to the newly constructed airport in Saint John. He had a very enjoyable career with Air Canada for 33 years retiring December 31, 1984 as Passenger & Cargo Sales & Service manager for New Brunswick. Dick moved his family to Scotland with a 5 year assignment as manager in Glasgow. Upon his return to Canada in 1975, he settled his family in Fredericton and continued for the next 9 years with Air Canada until his retirement. Dick represented the airline with various service clubs, Kiwanis Club, Board of Trade, Toastmasters, 1st President of Rothesay Community Living, Knights of Columbus, etc. as well as with various church organizations. For many years he and his wife, Mary, were faithful volunteers with Meals on Wheels.
Dick and his family also became quite well known in tennis circles particularly in Fredericton and Saint John. Dick and Mary also enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida over the past years where they developed many close and valued friendships. Richard is survived by his wife, Mary of 59 years; his children, Mary Ann Appleby, David Gormley (Edda) of Florida, Daniel Gormley (Heather McCleave) of Rothesay, Lisa MacIntosh (Fulton) of Fredericton, and Susan Gormley (Scott Barker) of Fredericton; grandchildren, Christopher and Andrew Appleby, Megan and Peter MacIntosh, Richard & Katie and Michael and Sean Gormley. Also surviving are brother Frank (Esther) of Victoria, BC and one sister Ann Marie Anderson (Ian) of Hampton, NB. Richard is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his parents and by a daughter Ellen; four brothers, Gerard (Mardie), Leo (Clare), Joseph (Carmel), and Paul as well as two infant sisters, Mary Clair and Margaret Mary. The family would like to thank both DECH and Saint John Regional Hospital, Dr. Ruest, the Wellness Staff at St. Anne’s Court, and the Red Cross for your wonderful care.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, on Wednesday, October 15th 2014 from 2 to 5pm. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 12:05pm with Father Bill Brennan as celebrant. Interment will be held in the Hermitage Cemetery.
