It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Melvin Quinn on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014. Melvin passed away with his family at his side, at the Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, where he had resided for the past two years.
Born in Sydney, Melvin was the son of the late Edward Joseph and Gertrude (Brennan) Quinn.
He was a longtime resident of New Waterford and a former member of St. Agnes Church.
Melvin was employed with the Dominion Coal Co. and Devco for over 43 years working in the Franklin, Toronto, No. 12, Princess and retiring from Lingan. He was a 4th Degree Member of the New Waterford KOC, a loyal Habs fan and he enjoyed listening to fiddle music; but Melvin’s true enjoyment was conversation, loving a good argument and in that department he really knew how to stir the pot.
Melvin will be sadly missed by his loving children, daughters, Mary (Andrew) Geddes, Burnaby, B.C., Ann (David) Armsworthy, Sydney River, Delores (Bill) Gouthro, Lower Sackville; sons, Edward (Sandra), New Waterford, John, Moncton, N.B., Bernard, New Waterford, Kevin (Minnie) Grande Cache, Alta. Also surviving are six cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Melvin was predeceased by his loving wife Catherine Frances (Jessome), 1997, brothers, Richard, James, stepbrother Kevin, sisters, Marcella and Margaret.
In honoring Melvin’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St,, New Waterford.
At the family’s request, a funeral Mass at St. Leonard’s Church and interment in St. Agnes Cemetery will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
