Short, Edmund John, passed away peacefully at 86 years of age on October 11, 2014 in Truro. John is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria and sons, John (Heather), Edmonton, AB, Bruce (Elizabeth), Quinte West, ON. His memory will always be cherished by his grandchildren, James and Hilary, (John) and Tessa, Molly and Katie, (Bruce).
John was born in Fogo, Newfoundland to Magistrate N. Short, O.B.E. and wife, Gracie. John earned scholarships in school which led to successful graduation from the Pre-Med Program of Memorial University. He progressed to a career in Chartered Accountancy after completing his studies in same at McGill University.
While comptroller of Harvey and Company of St. Johns, Nfld. he was chairman of the Board of the Janeway Children’s Hospital for many years for which he was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Anniversary Medal in 1977 for outstanding service.
In 1978 John moved to Truro as President of Wilson Equipment. He continued his life of service on the board of Colchester Regional Hospital and through his lifelong involvement in Rotary International which recognized him as a Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication and contribution to the mission of Rotary.
John was an avid salmon fly fisherman, tennis and bridge player. In earlier years he and Gloria enjoyed frequent travels both on this continent and across both oceans. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his beloved summer home at Shortts Lake.
John will be deeply missed and always remembered with love by all of his family. John will always be loved by his devoted wife of 63 years, Gloria, who remained at his side throughout the months of his final illness.
Many thanks to the staff of Cedarstone Enhanced Care for their compassionate care since May of this year. There is no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2014 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation or to a charity of choice.
