It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of a loving father and grandfather, James MacKenzie on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with loving family by his side.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late John and Mary (McNeil) MacKenzie.
Jimmie was a union labourer in Boston for many years working alongside his brothers, before returning home to Cape Breton. He was a hard worker and avid sports fan. He was a good natured man quick with a joke or a funny one liner. He was a member of St Joseph's parish and the pensioners club in Reserve, where he enjoyed playing darts with many good friends.
Jimmie will be sadly missed by his children, Mary McGee and her husband Eddie, Kathleen Conroy and her husband Sean of Quincy, Mass. James MacKenzie Jr. and his wife Karen of Whitman and Steven MacKenzie and his wife Julie of Quincy; his eight grandchildren, Ashley, John, Michael, Mark, Kerrin and Steven of Quincy, Ian of Whitman and Patrick, U.S. Army of Pensacola, Fla.. his loving companion, Mildred Shepard; brothers, Donald (Delores) of Halifax, Edward (Carolyn), Bobby (Debbie); sisters, SC Miriam, Donna and SC Mary Alice of Massachusetts and Audrey (Dave) of New Hampshire. Also survived by many nieces nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty Lawrence); two brothers, Roy and Billy and his sister, Evelyn Marie.
The family of Jimmie would like the thank the Shepard family for their love and support. We would also like to thank the staff of the VON for the care provided to Jimmie during his illness. Special thanks to Elaine & Sonya. Also thank you to the doctors, nurses & support staff on 4c of Regional Hospital for the excellent care provided to Jim.
Memorial donations in Jimmie's memory may be made to The Parkinson Society Canada.
Arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. There will be no visitation, at Jimmie’s request. A funeral mass celebrating his life will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. at St Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. The Rev Norman MacPhee will be officiating. The interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
