Edgar Hartery

Passed on: October 25th, 2014

Passed away suddenly but peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Glenbrook Lodge in St. John's, Edgar Hartery. Predeceased by his mother, Annie. Edgar leaves to mourn his stepsister, Donna Rice of British Columbia, a large circle of relatives in Cape Broyle and Calvert, and the family he happily became part of - Sean and Karen Gulliver and their sons, Parker, Jaxson and Raygan. Memories of Edgar will be read in the smiles of the legions who knew him. From those who grew up with him at Mt. Cashel, the Stamp family, the hockey fraternity of days long gone at the Stadium, be they his beloved St. Bon's or hated rivals, his cherished friends at the Benevolent Irish Society, his Confederation Building buddies, the Tancock family, the swollen crowds of every Regatta day, and for the last thirty - five years, his baseball brothers on the Shamrocks. When Edgar was old enough to leave Mt. Cashel, his first job was shining shoes at the Confederation Building. Mr. Smallwood was an appreciative recipient. That entry into our seat of government lead to a full-time position at the Registry of Deeds. He would work there until his retirement. Drawn to sports, Edgar was a loyal, boisterous super-fan of St. Bon's hockey and baseball teams. A ticket seller of unrivalled energy, he plied his trade at St. Bon's Sports Days and, when the snow blanketed Water Street, the Mt. Cashel Raffle benefited from his salesmanship. The Catholic Youth Club was always remembered with fondness by Edgar. It was there he grew into a supremely nimble dancer. The Regatta, he loved. The Regatta Committee expected always his pre-dawn appearance to see if the races would go that day. A man of rigid allegiance, the New York Yankees stole much of his heart. No doubt, local baseball and his Shamrocks knew his affection as well. How fitting, that just last week he was able to attend (and sit in the dugout) the intermediate champion Shamrocks' title game and celebrate with the victors. Age ushers in reflection and not long ago Edgar spoke of the many who had supported him in times of need. In particular, he spoke with deep thanks of Laurie Stamp, Bob Jenkins, Bill Vincent, Bas Whelan, Dan Reardon and Edgar's best friend, Sean Gulliver. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Monday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 pm. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at R.C. Cemetery, Cape Broyle. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Edgar's life was not always easy. He was a true survivor. That is how his countless friends will always remember him.
