Jean Elizabeth Morrison

Jean Elizabeth Morrison 1919 - 2014
It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Elizabeth Morrison, 95, announces her passing on October 28th, 2014 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Jean was born June 7th, 1919 in Richibucto, NB, and grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton. She was the third of five daughters of the late Chesley DeMille and Isabel (Jardine) Buck.
Jean was first a wife and mother and a friend to many. She was always “going out the door with a basket of goodies” for family or friends. Jean worked in Sydney as a young woman where she met her husband, the late Dr. William Ross Morrison. They lived in Great Village before moving to Amherst in 1947.
Living in Amherst for more than 60 years, Jean was active in the community. She sang in the choir at Trinity - St. Stephens United Church, was a member of the Lord Amherst chapter IODE and the hospital auxiliary, played golf and badminton. She enjoyed playing bridge well into her eighties. Jean worked for the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation as an area representative, arranging for volunteers for the fundraising campaign in Cumberland and Colchester counties. She made many friends driving to the different communities to visit area captains and distribute memorial cards. She loved “Morningside” in Tidnish, the family cottage where she spent many happy summers bringing up her children and grandchildren, gardening, walking the sand flats, and entertaining.
Much loved by her family, including son, Alan (Elizabeth); daughter, Eleanor (Earl) Casey, grandsons Steven (Michelle), Bruce (Natalie) and great-grandchildren Will and Elle, and Peter (Emily) and great-grandchildren Charlotte and Eli; son-in-law Lester MacMaster, grandchildren, Jennifer (Angus) Furlong and great-granddaughter Maggie, Jeffrey (Ada Poranek), and Jonathan (Sarah) and great-granddaughter Caroline, and by sisters, Peggy McAlpine, Eleanor Tennant, and Grace McMurray, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Ross, daughter Margie MacMaster, brother Colin (in infancy), sister Marion MacDonald, brothers-in-law Hugh Tennant, Bob McAlpine, Leonard McMurray, and Bill MacDonald, and great-grandson Gideon MacMaster (at birth).
Special thanks to the staff of Centennial Villa where Jean spent more than six happy years, and to those who cared for her at the CRHCC for the “Mah-va-lous” care during the past four months.
A wonderful, happy lady, who enjoyed every day and the beauty she found in it, she taught us much and we loved her.
Visitation will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Saturday, November 1st, from 4:00-7:00pm. A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, at Trinity – St. Stephen’s United Church at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the church hall. Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906).
Memorial donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Cumberland Healthcare Auxiliary or charity of your choice.
